Is it Legal to Play Casino Games Online in New Jersey?

9

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill on February 27th, 2013, which authorized the operation of regulated online casinos in the state.

A short list of approved operators was given the go-ahead to apply for online gaming licenses on November 21st, 2013 by the New Jersey’s gaming regulators – the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE). Players do NOT have to be residents of New Jersey, they simply have to be over 21 and physically in New Jersey when they log in to play.

A legal, regulated online casino or poker site in New Jersey can only be offered by land-based casinos in Atlantic City. Each Atlantic City casino that participates is granted a license for 5 online casino sites that they may sublicense to another brand-holder. For example, Betfair NJ Online Casino does not have a land-based operation, but they are a legal online casino. Betfair’s online casino license is actually held by Golden Nugget NJ, who is referred to as their “License partner.”

The only legal online casinos operating in New Jersey are those licensed and approved by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. Though other online casinos may advertise themselves as legal, they are not.
